How Can You Serve?

From big tasks to small, there are many ways you can serve at SHPC this fall!

We need help in the kitchen – prepping & serving Wednesday night dinner. We also need someone to collect money for dinner tickets. If you can help in the 2017-2018 season, contact Barbara Hayslip at (205) 339-3330 or

Grab your friends, small group, or Sunday School class and sign up to provide a meal for Sunday Club! For questions, meal suggestions, and to sign up, contact Martha Foster at (205) 915-0279 or

We need 24 tutors! At the start of this coming school year, South Highland will begin its 5th year of one-on-one tutoring of 2nd graders at South Hampton School in Pratt City through STAIR, Start the Adventure in Reading. Some of our tutors have participated the entire time, while others for a year or two. We tutor on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, and no special skills are needed other than being able to read! We meet at SHPC to go to South Hampton on the church bus, which is fun! Chef Joe provides snacks for the children. Contact Lee Cooper at (205) 592-0263 or Lu Mahon at (205) 879-4157 for more information! STAIR is such an amazing program, and it will give you experiences you will never forget!

Calling all rings - the Highland Ringers want you! Experience is desired but not required. For more info, contact Philip Copeland at

The church office is looking for someone who would like to volunteer at the reception desk. No experience needed! Please contact Brenda Keith at (205) 933-0790 or

Want to share your faith? Looking for a mission INSIDE the church? We need volunteers for Sunday school teachers for SHPC’s children and youth. We also need help on Sunday evenings with the youth and Wednesday evenings with the children. These are some wonderful ways to meet new friends. Contact Katya at or (205) 873-0039 to learn about Children’s Ministry. Contact Daniel at or (205) 933-0790 to learn about Youth Ministry.

Our SHOP Ministry (South Highland Mental Health Outreach Project) seeks additional volunteers to help grow our program. SHOP was formed to ensure that people in the Birmingham area who are living with mental illness have a high quality, faith-based program aimed at improving their quality of life. SHOP currently meets on Tuesdays from 9am-1pm at the church and plans to add an additional group on Thursdays from 9am-1pm. SHOP is a ministry of presence, and we have been recognized as a model for this type of program. Plan to join us in this life changing ministry where volunteers and members are building lasting relationships. If you are interested in more info about the program or want to see it in action, join us any Tuesday from 9am-1pm in the Builder’s Classroom. Questions? Contact Brad Hale at or (205) 933-0790 or Jim Foster at or (205) 706-4343!

On Sunday, October 1, 2017, the Upper Room Sunday School Class will host our SECOND ANNUAL SUNDAY CLUB FREE-FOR-Y’ALL! Thanks to the congregation’s generosity last fall, this shopping event for Sunday Club was a HUGE SUCCESS! Please help us to do it again this year by cleaning out your closets. We need donations of gently used or new men’s and women’s clothing (Sizes M, L, XL and Plus sizes), shoes, socks, & accessories, and personal care items (shampoo, deodorant, and body wash). Please bring your donated items to Room G-15 (Upper Room Classroom) during the month of September. If you have any questions, please contact Sara Hale at, Becky Smith at, or any Upper Room class member.
