In the midst of the craziness of the holiday season, it’s easy to miss what Advent is all about. Advent means “coming” or “arrival.” It’s a season of both remembrance and expectant waiting. We reflect on the mystery of the Incarnation, when God took on flesh and came as a baby named Jesus to save us from our sin. At the same time, we prepare for Jesus’ second coming, when our triumphant King will return in glory.

This Advent, the staff of SHPC has put together a daily devotional to help us keep our hearts and minds focused on who Jesus is and what he has done for us. Scripture tells us that Jesus has many different names and titles, and each one reveals an essential truth about his identity. Our Advent sermon series will explore the names found in Isaiah 9:6—Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. This devotional is meant to encourage you to meditate on the many other names for Jesus found throughout the Bible.

Inside you’ll find a daily Scripture reading on the left side, followed by a short reflection on the right side. On Sundays, there’s no Scripture or reflection, but we include a prayer and invite you to worship with us at South Highland. You can read through this devotional individually or as a family. Advent is a perfect opportunity or children to begin to grasp the meaning of Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection.

Our prayer and hope are that as you contemplate the different names of Jesus, you will come to know him and love him in a deeper way this Advent season.
