The season of Lent at South Highland offers all a reminder to examine ourselves in the light of God’s love, perceive where our devotion to Christ may have cooled, and pray to honestly repent – all in anticipation of the joyous celebration of Jesus’ Easter Sunday resurrection. Join us as we make this journey together.
February 21 – Ash Wednesday
There are two opportunities to worship and receive the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday: 12:00 noon in the Chapel and 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Both services will also include the sacrament of Holy Communion. The evening service will be livestreamed here, on Facebook and on YouTube, and will be preceded by supper in Davis Family Hall at 5:30 p.m. Menu: Chicken Pot Pie, Roasted Broccoli, Salad Bar, Roll, Dessert.
Lenten Devotional

Be sure to pick up your copy of this year’s Lenten Devotional booklet, “The Joy of Salvation,” inspired by beloved theologian Henri Nouwen. These thoughtful daily readings include scripture, words from Nouwen, prayer and a devotional.
Weekly Wednesday Vespers
Each Wednesday during Lent, we gather for quiet worship in the beautiful Chapel of South Highland, with messages on the theme of “The Seven Last Words of Jesus from the Cross.” Services begin at 6:30 p.m. and are preceded by supper at 5:30 p.m. in Davis Family Hall.
April 2 – Palm Sunday
Celebrate with us the triumphant entry into Jerusalem of Jesus Christ, as he begins his journey to the cross on Good Friday. Both services, at 8:30 and 11:00 a.m., will include the sacrament of Holy Communion.
Holy Week Noon Worship
Each day during Holy Week (except for Thursday) offers an opportunity to gather for a brief midday worship service. Preachers from around the South Highland community will bring the message, and the service will be followed by a light lunch in Davis Family Hall.
- Monday, April 3 – Rev. Dr. Tim Kelly, Southside Baptist Church
- Tuesday, April 4 – Rev. Mikah Hudson, Highlands UMC
- Wednesday, April 5 – Rev. H. Huey Gardener, St. Mary’s-on-the-Highlands
April 6 – Maundy Thursday
This powerful evening worship service takes us through Jesus’ last night, including the Last Supper, fervent prayer in the garden, his arrest, trial, journey to the cross and crucifixion. Following 5:30 p.m. supper in Davis Family Hall, we gather at 6:30 in the Sanctuary for worship. The service will also be livestreamed here, on Facebook and on YouTube.
April 8 – Easter Egg Hunt
Bring your kids to join in the fun and excitement at McCallum Park in Vestavia Hills for SHPC’s Easter Egg Hunt! The hunt begins promptly at 10:30 a.m. Bring your own picnic lunch and stay for fellowship with your South Highland family. Get directions and more info here.
April 9 – Easter Sunday
“He is risen! He is risen, indeed!” Easter Sunday includes some of our most favorite hymns and celebratory music, including the “Halleluiah” chorus, as Christ’s resurrection is celebrated. Dr. Ed Hurley’s message will be titled, “Earthquaking Faith.” Both services this Sunday will be in the Sanctuary, with the 11:00 service available by live stream.
