Biblical Justice Initiatives

Biblical Justice Initiatives

At South Highland, we believe the Scriptures are our ultimate authority in all spheres of life. And when we read God’s Word, we discover a God whose heart is unrelentingly committed to justice. We meet a God who again and again expresses concern and care for the poor, the widow, the alien, and the orphan—the most vulnerable members of our society.

We believe God’s vision of justice and human flourishing presented in the Bible is far richer and more comprehensive than anything a political party or ideology could dream up. That’s why we’re committed to pursuing biblical justice with confidence, courage, and hope.

In 2020, our Elders voted unanimously to join the PC(USA)’s Matthew 25 Initiative. The Matthew 25 Vision calls us to be actively engaged in the world around us. Our initiative will focus on two goals: (1) dismantling structural racism and (2) eradicating systemic poverty.

Social Justice Book Club

This quarterly gathering helps keep in the foreground the task of loving and caring for all of God’s children. Past topics have included race, immigration, equal justice, gun violence, poverty and more.

Next time: The working homeless. In a country where hard work and determination are supposed to lead to success, skyrocketing rents, low wages, and a lack of tenant rights have produced a startling phenomenon: People with full-time jobs cannot keep a roof over their head. These families are being forced into homelessness not by a failing economy but a thriving one. There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America is a gripping and deeply reported book in which author Brian Goldstone plunges readers into the lives of five Atlanta families struggling to remain housed in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city. The book is available wherever you get your books.
