Habitat for Humanity

South Highland has served Habitat for Humanity for over 25 years. Teams of SHPC volunteers join the crew to build affordable housing for low-income families. Please read the details on this year’s project. If you have further questions, contact Don Koch or Bill Stribling.

Info on the Fall 2024 Build

This year’s Habitat build is for Timmesha Baylor and her daughter, Raelya, at 3823 Barton Lane in Bessemer. (see map below).

Volunteers must register online for shifts on the Habitat website. Click here for Habitat’s Volunteer page, then click Volunteer Calendar, select the option for the Presbytery Build. The access code is presby24. Create a volunteer login account and follow the directions.

This year South Highland has reserved three work days exclusively: Thursday, September 12; Saturday, September14; and Saturday, November 2. At the end of the first Saturday we will have moved the project from a concrete slab to a structure recognizable as a house. The work will be dirty, hot and strenuous. The next day you will be aching in unfamiliar places, which is God’s way of saying, “Good job”. The November date will be dedicated to “touch-up” tasks like towel bars and door knobs. Please come, your help is needed.

Habitat will provide bottled water and a portable toilet. Volunteers provide their own lunches; there aren’t any restaurants close by, so you may consider bringing your own and maybe a folding camp chair if you wish. Habitat will provide tools, hard hats and safety glasses, but you can bring your own if you prefer. Also, since splinters don’t feel very good, be sure to bring work gloves. Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes. And, wear clothes you don’t mind being “decorated” by paint or foam sealer.
