Partnering to Relieve Homelessness

Avery Rhodes, Founder and Executive Director of Birmingham’s Community on the Rise, spoke to a warm and wonderful SHPC crowd at a special Chili After Church event on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Community on the Rise works with people experiencing homelessness in our community. Their truly problem-solving approach embraces survivors by celebrating their strengths and gifts, providing housing in the beautiful Marigold House, and offering a full range of counseling and gainful employment in an eco-friendly business. All to help people move beyond a life of homelessness.

The innovative infrastructure of Community on the Rise centers around the recycling of #5 plastics and transforming plastic waste into unbelievably beautiful items like necklaces, earrings, planters, and ornaments. (Available at the website – www.communityontherise.com)

This organization also provides critical personal document recovery services for the Birmingham community. Having ID, birth certificates and social security cards are critical for jobs, housing, healthcare, voting and banking.

SHPC is called to serve Jesus by contributing to the well-being of the most vulnerable in society, as affirmed by our commitment to the PCUSA’s Matthew 25 initiative. Birmingham’s Community on the Rise embodies the goals of Matthew 25.

Through prayer, recycling and service, SHPC will continue to partner with Community on the Rise. Please bring your clean, label-free, #5 plastics to the recycling bin in the Davis Family Hall. Opportunities for service include delivering SHPC’s recyclables, helping in the ID clinics (clinics are Mondays and/or Thursdays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., training provided), or prepping the plastics. These folks are awesome! Please get to know Community on the Rise and keep their mission in your prayers.
